Medusa Gives Girls Lacrosse A New Look

Girls lacrosse takes on a new look with Medusa Lacrosse.

Alex and Jackie Fiore are sisters who have each had very successful lacrosse careers and are sharing their passion and experience with today's young women athletes through Medusa Lacrosse.

Alex was a 4 year starter at GCHS and went on to play Division 1 lacrosse at Princeton University, where she was a 1st Team All American. Her team won back-to-back National Championships in 2002 and 2003.

Jackie was also a 4 year starter and captain of the GCHS Varsity Women's Lacrosse Team and went on to play Division 1 Lacrosse at Boston College.  She was awarded numerous accolades throughout her lacrosse career.  Jackie coached both lacrosse and field hockey for five years at GCHS and at the Middle School.  Jackie is the head coach of the JV women's lacrosse team at South Side High School in Rockville Centre.

This week, Medusa's Little Laxers fall clinic begins in Garden City for girls ages 4-7. As they work on introductory skills and age appropriate exercises, Alex and Jackie want to make sure their young students are having a ton of fun as well. {Because really, what good is any program if the little ones aren't having any fun?} To accomplish this, Medusa becomes creative with different themes for each session such as Wacky Socks Day, Crazy Hair Doo Day, Tu Tus for Laxers Day and Halloween Costume Day, among others. They definitely know how to keep the little ones interested!

The cost for this unique program is $125 per person for four sessions and $140 for 5 sessions. Register your daughter at www.medusalacrosse.com. Click on the "Registration Forms" Tab. Please make checks payable to Medusa Lacrosse LLC. Cash payments receive a $10 discount. Clinic dates are as follows: September 22, 29 and October 6, 13, 20 and 27. Time: 4:00 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.

Have a great season!

Ready, Set, Go! St. Anne's Respite Games September 19th

The Not-So-Calm Before the Storm:  Respite Games Held Early on Spirit Day - September 19, 2015

GARDEN CITY, New York (August 10, 2015)  Before the bounce rides, games and music even begin, a very special part of Spirit Day has already begun:  the Respite Games.  Starting at noon on Spirit Day, indoor games and activities are hosted by Saint Anne’s for children and young adults who have special needs.  The Respite Games have been part of Spirit Day for the last several years.

Organized by Saint Anne’s Special Needs Ministry, the Respite Games offer a sampling of the year-long Respite Care program, which provides wonderful evenings of fun and friendship for children who have special needs from the age of 5 on through young adulthood.   Saint Anne’s Respite Care program meets on various Friday evenings at Saint Anne’s throughout the year.  It is centered on the relationship between the special children and their volunteer buddies, both teens and adults, who partner with them for a light dinner and some great activities, which include sports, music, games and arts and crafts projects.

According to John Rakowski, who leads the activities at the Respite Games and has served as a Respite volunteer for many years, “Every moment volunteers spend with these kids is a blessing.  Spirit Day is an extension of that wonderful feeling.”

The Church of St. Anne hosts its 13th annual Spirit Day on Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 1-10pm with rides, games and music all day and evening.  The day is highlighted with a beautiful celebration of Mass outdoors at 5pm and the exciting Big Bucks Raffle drawing at 10pm.  Additional Big Bucks tickets are always available at the rectory or you may call and we will be happy to mail one to you.  Families from the parish who have special needs children and are interested in participating in the Respite Games on Spirit Day are invited to contact Linda Leone at St. Anne’s Parish office at 352-5904 or visit the website at www.stannesgc.org

Local {Quality} Eats

Warning: If you haven't eaten lunch yet, you may be feeling especially hungry after reading this post.

Two nights ago, at the last minute, I started craving some really good Italian food (good meaning high quality, foodie-worthy food). Since I had nothing planned and no particular restaurant in mind, I wasn't sure where to go. I didn't want anything formal or stiff and I didn't want to travel far so I decided on Capo Ristorante. Capo is usually my go-to panini place but I haven't been there for a sit-down in way too long.

Capo is a little Italian restaurant on Covert Ave in Floral Park, formerly a La Bottega. It's inviting and non-stuffy, yet the food is amaaaazing. I'll let the pictures do the talking:

We started off with zucchini flowers. Better than the ones I had in Rome. Seriously.

Followed by the most amazing figs- TDF.

Parmesan pesto salmon with gorgonzola mashed potatoes and escarole- mmm.

Scrumptous stuffed chicken with the same potatoes.

A fabulous Napa Chardonnay rounded everything out just right.

In summary, the food here pretty much always knocks my socks off, yet the environment isn't stiff or too fancy. It's a cozy, informal place turning out dishes which rival some of NYC's best. Capo is a local gem for sure if you are a self-declared foodie {like me}!

Have you been? Let me know your thoughts.

Dr. Lizzio's Tips

Today we welcome Dr. Dominique Lizzio back to Inside Garden City as she gives us some important tips for staying {dentally} healthy.

End of summer has arrived…lazy mornings will soon be replaced with mad dashes to the bus stop. With the rush of the school day, sometimes healthy dental habits get overlooked.
Here are some helpful tips to ensure your kid’s teeth stay healthy throughout the school year.

Brush!!!- Some mornings are more hectic than others. Brushing after breakfast is the best way to keep teeth healthy, but sometimes getting to school on time may mean having breakfast on the way. Brushing before eating is much better than not at all. Studies show that if we brush before we eat, the mouth’s pH will not dip low enough to form cavities.

Healthy Diet- Pack healthy food to eat at school. School provided lunches and snacks may be processed and high in sugar. Consider sending high fiber, low sugar treats. Keeping it simple…cut up fruit and vegetables and add cheese or hummus, will provide children with healthy alternatives.

Choose Water- Soda, juice or sports drinks often contain more sugar than a child should consume in an entire day. Aside from adding unnecessary calories, it can lead to afternoon energy crashes and, of course, tooth decay.

Safety- Children participating in organized sports should always wear mouth protection, helmets and face masks. An athletic mouth guard can help prevent injury to teeth and gums, and reduce risk of concussions if a head injury should occur. Ask advice from your child’s dentist about the type of mouth guard that is appropriate.

Check It Out- Children who fall and hurt their mouth should visit the school nurse and follow up with their dentist. Sometime issues from mouth injuries develop slowly and problems show up months or years later. Always let the dentist know if your child has had any injury to their face. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, it should be replaced within 30 minutes. Hold it by the crown, not the root and quickly rinse it with milk, saline or water prior to trying to re-insert it. If that is not possible, place tooth in some cool milk, sterile saline or between cheek and gum until you can get to a dentist or hospital for help.

Cavities Don’t Usually Hurt- Cavities in baby teeth don’t hurt until they become infected. Remember to bring your children to the dentist every 6 months for an examination, beginning 6 months after they get their first tooth. Healthy baby teeth are important for children to chew and speak properly. Additionally, these first teeth save the space for permanent teeth to grow into.

Braces- Since it can be challenging to brush and floss properly around braces, plaque can build up leading to permanent damage of tooth enamel. Make sure time is taken for your child to properly clean their teeth and make healthy choices when it comes to their diet.

Healthy habits should begin at a young age, but it’s never too late to start. Wishing all of our families a safe, happy and healthy school year!

Dr. Lizzio can be reached at Long Island Family Dental. 901 Stewart Ave, GC. 516-747-2400
